Marietta was established in 1834 and named after T.R.R. Cobb’s wife, Mary and became a county seat the same year. Today it is acknowledged as a bustling community that undoubtedly preserves its ties to an eventful past. Many of the current residents take advantage of the metropolitan opportunities all the while enjoying the small-town atmosphere.
Marietta is the largest incorporated city in the county. A destination for visitors and locals alike with springtime lunch concerts in Glover Park, numerous specialty shops and an eclectic blend of restaurants, museums and theaters, downtown Marietta and the Marietta Square have long been the center of Cobb community activity. The Square has an old-fashioned feel. It provides the perfect spot for relaxation, children's play and the exchange of wedding vows. The Square is surrounded by many businesses operating in renovated historic retail buildings and warehouses as well as beautiful homes that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
There are fabulous restaurants, antique shops, lovely parks, original Victorian homes and historic sites for residents and visitors to experience. Over the past two decades, Maritta has experienced a population increase of approximately 40%.
